Switching to SIM-only deals has just been made easier by OfCom

10th July 2010 - As many of you know, switching mobile phone networks can be a real nightmare. Although the process has improved over recent times there has often been too long a delay to get the PAC number required and then days to port the number over.

At the beginning of July OfCom announced new guidelines for 2011 stating that all UK networks will have to give customers their PAC code immediately upon request allowing mobile users to keep their numbers and change networks faster. The networks must give the information required over the phone or via text message.

OfCom CEO Ed Richards stated "Our research shows that over 70 per cent of consumers want to keep their mobile number when they switch providers. Reducing the time it takes to transfer a mobile number to one working day, and enabling consumers to obtain a PAC quickly, means consumers will be able to switch provider more easily without the costs or inconvenience of changing their number."

In addition to this, the speed of porting a number over was also cut down to 1 day from the current 2 days making the process less disruptive for users.

This is great news for the many mobile phone customers wishing to change to SIM-only deals or other mobile contracts. The shorter waiting time makes it so much easier to complete the transfer process and customers can be using their new network within 24 hours! This in combination with short-term 30 day contracts will allow customers to change networks more frequently, taking advantage competitive offers.
