Like the iPad, the new iPhone 4 will be using a new standard for SIM cards called the Micro SIM (also known as 3FF SIM). This is just a smaller version of the current SIMs that we all use in our mobiles but if you are looking to upgrade to the iPhone 4 you will need the the new Micro SIM which will soon be available on all networks supporting the iPhone 4 including O2 and Vodafone.
O2 have already released information regarding the change to the Micro SIM. They state on their website that there are two ways to get it. If customers have registered for updates on the iPhone 4 then they might receive a Micro SIM card in the post before the iPhone 4 becomes available. If you are purchasing an iPhone 4 on contract or PAYG then you will get the Micro SIM card with the phone. Micro SIM-only deals will also be available should you prefer, if you have purchased the PAYG handset.
Here are some pictures of what the Micro SIM card looks like on O2.

It is very much the same as a standard SIM only much smaller. What’s smart here is that the standard SIM size can be snapped out and used as normal in your existing phone and when you decided to move over to the iPhone 4 you can then pop out the Micro SIM card.
So, what do I do if I need to put my micro SIM card back into my old phone which just takes a normal SIM card? If you need to do this whether you just want to take an old phone to go to the beach or whatever, then you will need a micro sim adapter. O2 doesn’t state that it will provide customers with one of these but we expect that they will soon be widely available to purchase.
