sidekickGoogle have already taken control of our home Internet life with probably 99% of Internet users using either Google’s search engine, Google Maps, Google Mail or one of Google’s many other tools and online services and now they are taking small steps further to doing the same with our mobile life. With the increase in mobile internet usage and phones with GPS capabilities Google have launched an application called Google Latitude that enables you to share your location with your friends. This feature is an addition to Google maps mobile and within iGoogle. This service is completely opt-in so nobody has to know where you are unless you want to. What’s more is that Google Talk can be used with Latitude and also resembles Twitter in that you can update your status and profile photos. So, is this an attempt for Google to enter the social networking scene? Most definitely. Will it take off in the same way Facebook and Twitter have? We’ll have to wait and see.

One of the issues brought up in the Metro newspaper recently is that Google Latitude could be used to spy on your partner or someone else by opting them unknowingly. “A spy in your pocket”. It could also be used for anxious parents to keep tabs on their children, which might not actually be a bad thing.
