Bic MobileBic….Yes Bic the French ball point pen maker, has surprisingly developed a budget mobile phone that can be bought over the counter like a packet of cigarettes. This new product is available in France and is a quick-sale item aimed at providing convenience. The phone costs around £30 for the phone, sim card and 1 hour of calls. The phone is available on the Orange network and is a move by the operator to fend of competition from low-cost vendors who are trying to discourage consumers from signing long-term contracts that come with new mobile phones. The Bic phone, introduced this month in France, was designed in part to compete with the growing range of so-called SIM-only plans spreading in Europe.

SIM only deals are a offered by a range of networks in France including, Tele2 and SFR. Users simply buy a SIM card and insert into their existing mobile. They aren’t tied into a long-term contract and the SIMs often offer better value for money and flexibility.

“The concept of the Bic phone is really about a new way of making the prepaid offer,” said Laure Jouffre, Orange’s marketing director. “It is a response to very simple users, to occasional users, to travelers. What is new is that it is a ready-to-use proposition. You just take the package, open it and use it.”
